Every night the misses turns off my gigabit router as she says the fan
is too loud. Well I decided to make it it quieter a) to stop her
nagging and b) because I need it on 24 hours, this mod will hopefully
ensure peace for her & peace for me.

Slug Reborn
Well as you probably know I dumped my slug (nslu2) project after it died. Well yesterday I took it back up again but it was playing up no end, it would randomly not power on for more than 5 seconds, or wouldn’t power on if the ethernet was plugged in etc, as a test I managed to install Debian on a USB stick on it. I tried to read the old usb HDD it had but there was lots of data missing, I tried to format it in XP but it failed after only 4% so definitely FUBAR.I tried a brand new HDD on the slug and that wouldn’t work either but did in XP. After much head scratching I found out the PSU was faulty. I thought it was the HDD. This left me with the old chicken and egg equivalent where by I don’t know if the power killed the disk or vice versa, I prefer the case of my Freecom HDD but again I don’t know if that was what killed everything so I just stuck with the one that the new disk came in.
I’m install Debian at this very moment so will hopefully be ready to play with in a couple of hours or so.

Resolve windows hostname inside a local network

Changing the default MOTD with Debian 5 Lenny
To change or remove the message, simply edit the /etc/motd file in
your favourite text editor either as the root user or using sudo and
then save the file. Clear all the text for no MOTD or replace it with
whatever you would prefer. The next time you log in it will show the
new (or no) text message.
This will work for now, but on reboot the file is reconstructed by
the /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh script. It writes out "uname -snrvm" to
/var/run/motd (/etc/motd is a symbolic link to /var/run/motd) and then
adds the text from /etc/motd.tail
Therefore to change what goes into the motd file on reboot, edit the
/etc/motd.tail file, making it blank for no message of the day.
If you don’t want the uname information to be included in the motd
file then you would also need to modify the /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh
file.
GuruPlug
GlobalScale Technologies have recently announced the follow up to their SheevaPlug model the GuruPlug. And I must say what a sexy little bit of kit it is (sad I know) there’s two versions, the standard is pretty much the same as the SheevaPlug, the Plus edition would be the way to go as it gives you 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports, one eSATA connector, and built-in WiFi and Bluetooth + nice LOW power consumption.
Understandably i’m highly tempted as it would be a good replacement for my NSLU2 but can’t warrant the outplay as it would be merely a ‘toy’. I will give it a year and see if the price drops.
